How to Choose Birthstones for a Custom Bracelet

A guide from our Costa Mesa atelier

When someone comes to me to design a birthstone bracelet, the first question I ask is never about metal or chain length. It's whose stones are going on it, and why. A birthstone bracelet is one of the most personal pieces a person can wear, and the choices you make about which stones, how many, and in what order all carry meaning. After years of building these one at a time in our Costa Mesa atelier, here is what I tell every client who is starting from scratch.

Birthstones by Month

Every stone on a birthstone bracelet ties back to a birth month, and most months carry a story worth knowing before you design around it.

January: Garnet, in red or green, associated with protection and lasting bonds.

February: Amethyst, violet purple, associated with calm and clarity.

March: Aquamarine, pale blue-green, associated with courage.

April: Diamond, colorless and brilliant, associated with enduring love.

May: Emerald, rich green, associated with renewal and growth.

June: Alexandrite, shifting from blue-green to purple in different light, associated with balance and new beginnings.

July: Ruby, deep red, associated with vitality and passion.

August: Peridot, warm green-gold, associated with strength and warmth.

September: Sapphire, most often blue, associated with wisdom and loyalty.

October: Pink tourmaline, associated with hope and creativity.

November: Citrine, golden yellow, associated with confidence and joy.

December: Blue topaz, associated with protection and good fortune.

Every stone we source is natural. We do not work with lab-grown stones, for sapphire or any other birthstone on this list.

Mixing Birthstones on One Bracelet

Most of the custom birthstone bracelets we build are not for one birthday, they are for a family. A mother wearing her three kids' birthstones. A couple combining both of their months. A daughter adding her grandmother's stone alongside her own. A few things I always walk clients through:

How many stones work on one bracelet. We have built pieces with close to a dozen stones on them for clients who wanted extended family represented, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins included. There is no strict limit. It comes down to what tells your story.

Order matters more than people expect. Birth order, left to right, is the most common approach, and it gives the bracelet a story you can actually tell someone when they ask about it.

The bracelet can grow with your family. We build these to be added onto. A new baby, a new grandchild, a new partner, we can set an additional stone into an existing piece rather than starting over, so the bracelet keeps pace with your life instead of staying frozen at the day you ordered it.

Durability and Everyday Care

Because we only work with natural stones, hardness varies from birthstone to birthstone, and that should factor into how you plan to wear the piece.

Sapphire, ruby, diamond, and alexandrite are hard enough for daily wear without much thought. Emerald and turquoise are softer and more porous, so I recommend taking those off before swimming, showering, or applying perfume and lotion directly to the wrist. A soft cloth after wear and occasional warm water cleaning is enough for most birthstone bracelets. Store the piece flat or hanging rather than tossed in with other jewelry, since stones can scratch each other in a drawer.

A Birthstone Bracelet as a Gift

A birthstone bracelet is one of the most personal gifts you can give, because it is built around someone else's life rather than pulled off a shelf. A few occasions where this comes up again and again in our design consultations:

Mother-in-law gifts. This is one of the most common requests we get, because it solves a real problem: how do you buy something meaningful for someone you love but may not know quite as well as your own mother. A bracelet built around her children's and grandchildren's birth months does that work for you.

Push presents. A push present is a gift given to a partner after the birth of a child, and a birthstone bracelet set with the new baby's stone, alongside any older siblings, is one of the most requested styles we build for this occasion.

Grandmother gifts. Adding grandchildren's birthstones to a single bracelet is one of our most repeated custom builds, and since we can add onto an existing piece, it grows right along with the family instead of needing to be replaced.

Anniversary and Mother's Day gifts. Combining a couple's birth months, or a mother's with her children's, works well for either occasion, and gives the gift a story beyond the date on the calendar.

How to Wear a Birthstone Bracelet

A birthstone bracelet holds up to daily wear, so most of our clients treat it as a piece they put on and do not take off, rather than something reserved for special occasions. It stacks well with a plain gold bangle or chain bracelet on the same wrist, or can be worn on its own when you want the stones to be the focus. For weddings, holidays, or milestone birthdays, it is also a natural piece to layer alongside a watch or a second bracelet without competing for attention.

If you want to see how we actually build these, we wrote a detailed look at our process for making a custom birthstone bracelet — from stone selection and setting to the final piece.

If you are ready to design your own, I build every custom birthstone bracelet by hand in our Costa Mesa atelier, one stone and one story at a time.

Common Questions About Birthstone Bracelets

Can I mix more than one birthstone on a single bracelet?

Yes. We have built pieces with up to a dozen stones, and many clients use their bracelet to represent extended family, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins included, most often arranged in birth order.

Are the stones in a Mama Bijoux birthstone bracelet natural or lab-grown?

All of our birthstones are natural. We do not offer lab-grown stones for any birthstone on the list, sapphire included.

What is the birthstone for June?

We work with alexandrite for June, a stone known for shifting color from blue-green to purple depending on the light.

Can I add a birthstone for my child or partner even if it is not my own birth month?

Yes, this is one of the most common reasons clients come to us for a custom birthstone bracelet. The stones do not need to share a birth month with the wearer.

How do I know what my birthstone is?

Your birthstone is tied to your birth month. January is garnet, February is amethyst, March is aquamarine, April is diamond, May is emerald, June is alexandrite, July is ruby, August is peridot, September is sapphire, October is pink tourmaline, November is citrine, and December is blue topaz.

Why do some of Mama Bijoux's birthstones differ from the traditional list?

For a couple of months we chose a stone with better everyday durability over the more commonly known one. Alexandrite for June wears better than pearl, and blue topaz for December wears better than turquoise, without losing the color or character people expect from those months.

Can I add more birthstones to my bracelet later?

Yes. We can set an additional stone into an existing bracelet when a new baby, grandchild, or partner joins the family, rather than building a new piece from scratch.

Is a birthstone bracelet a good gift for a mother-in-law?

Yes, it is one of our most requested gifts for exactly that reason. A bracelet built around her children's and grandchildren's birth months gives a meaningful, personal gift without needing to guess her individual taste.

Is a birthstone bracelet a good push present?

Yes. A bracelet set with the new baby's birthstone, alongside any older siblings, is one of the most requested styles we build for this occasion.

Is 14k gold safe for everyday wear?

Yes. Every birthstone bracelet is set in 14k gold, which does not tarnish and holds up well for people who wear their jewelry daily without taking it off.

How do I clean and care for a birthstone bracelet?

Wipe the piece with a soft cloth after wear and clean occasionally with warm water. Softer stones like emerald and turquoise should come off before swimming, showering, or applying lotion and perfume.
