Custom Fine Jewelry: How Mama Bijoux Designs from the Stone Up
The Standard
What "Custom" Actually Means
The word "custom" covers a wide range of things in jewelry. At its least ambitious, it means choosing a gemstone from an existing setting template. At its most ambitious, it means designing a completely original piece from a blank canvas.
At Mama Bijoux, custom means the latter. Every piece starts from scratch — no template, no preset silhouette that the client is fitting into. The design follows the story, the stones, and the person. We build the piece around you, not the other way around.
We never skip steps in the process or cut corners on quality for the sake of making something fast that won't last. This is how jewelry is created to be worn, loved, and kept for a lifetime.
The Process
Five Steps from Conversation to Finished Piece
The Consultation
Every custom piece begins with a conversation. For Mama Bijoux clients, this is a free consultation — in person in Newport Beach or by phone and video. This conversation is not a sales call. It's the beginning of the design process.
What is this piece marking? A birth, an anniversary, a redesign of something inherited?
Who is this for? What do they already wear? What metals, styles, and silhouettes?
Do you have existing stones, a stone in mind, or are you starting completely open?
What do you want this piece to feel like in twenty years? What story should it carry?
Stone Selection
For pieces that don't involve existing stones, stone selection happens after the consultation. Katie sources from trusted suppliers who understand the quality levels that fine jewelry requires.
Diamonds: cut quality, clarity, and color that hold up under daily wear and read beautifully in the chosen setting
Colored stones: color saturation and consistency, natural origin, and quality appropriate to the stone species
Birthstones: quality appropriate for fine jewelry, which varies dramatically by stone species
We present stone options with clear information about quality grading and pricing. No inflation of quality language and no pressure toward the highest price point.
CAD Design
Once the brief is clear and stones are selected, the design phase begins. Mama Bijoux uses computer-aided design (CAD) to create 3D renderings before any metal is cast or stone is set.
You see the piece from every angle before it's made
Adjust scale, stone size, and setting style before committing to production
Changes in CAD are cheap. Changes in finished metal are not.
Clients typically see one to three design iterations before approving. No production begins without explicit client sign-off.
Crafting
Once the design is approved, the piece moves to production. Mama Bijoux works with skilled artisan workshops — the master craftspeople whose hands translate the CAD design into a physical piece.
Casting — the gold is cast in the approved form
Stone setting — set by a skilled setter who understands the trade-offs between aesthetic and security
Finishing — the piece is polished, checked, and refined
Quality control — final inspection before delivery
Most custom pieces take 4–8 weeks from approved design to delivery. Redesigns and more complex pieces may take 6–10 weeks.
Delivery
Finished pieces ship in Mama Bijoux packaging with care instructions, stone documentation, and a certificate of authenticity. For local clients, in-person pickup in Newport Beach is available.
We follow up at 30 and 90 days — not to sell another piece, but to confirm the piece is wearing well and that the client is happy. If there's any issue with the setting or the finish, we address it.
Transparency
What Custom Fine Jewelry Costs
Custom pricing is transparent at Mama Bijoux. The cost of a piece is the sum of its parts — clearly communicated, not hidden in markup.

The Case For It
Why Custom Instead of Ready-Made?
Custom fine jewelry costs more and takes longer than buying a finished piece. The reasons clients choose it anyway:
It's designed for a specific person.
A ready-made piece is designed for the widest possible market. A custom piece is designed for one person.
The stones are chosen for this piece.
No catalog stone gets slotted in. Every stone is selected with the specific piece and person in mind.
The meaning is built in from the start.
Custom pieces carry a story that begins with the first conversation and ends when the piece is eventually passed on.
It will be worn.
The pieces that become heirlooms are almost always the ones that fit the wearer's life so well they never take them off.
